Is ASUS Zenfone 3s Max worth buying or not?

ASUS has launched a lot of phones in the new Zenfone 3 series. The Zenfone 3 brought some major changes in the design of the phone and even had fingerprint sensor in it. I would say that Zenfone 3 series was the best when we consider the royal design. ASUS has previously launched a phone focused on battery life that was Zenfone 3 Max. It had 4100 mAh of battery life. But I guess that wasn’t enough. So let us find out, is ASUS Zenfone 3s Max worth buying or not. Before we start, I would like to inform you that I have used this phone for like 10 days and I am going to share my experience with you.

Design

ASUS Zenfone 3s Max has a brushed metal aluminum finish on the back with a single antenna line which actually ruins the look a bit. Despite the massive battery the phone weighs only 175 g. It does look a bit heavier if you are used to using lightweight smartphones. The button placement is almost the standard one with micro-USB port on the bottom along with the speaker grills. On the right are the volume rockers along with the power button. The SIM tray is on the left while the 3.5 mm jack is on the top. This time the fingerprint sensor is placed on the physical home-screen button which takes some time to adjust. One now needs to press the home button in order to wake the phone and unlock it simultaneously which is similar to what Samsung and other brands have on their phones. Overall the phone has a premium look especially with the gold color.

Display

Zenfone 3s max comes with a 5.2-inch IPS HD display with a resolution of 720×1280 pixels. It has the 2.5D contoured glass with no Gorilla glass protection. The display is bright but the quality could have been improved. The viewing angles on the phone are great. The device can be used with one hand but is a bit slippery on the back. The display on the phone could have been improved to a full HD display.

Performance

Zenfone 3s Max is not that good when it comes to performance. Though it is the third phone in the Max series, we don’t see any significant improvement in the performance. It runs on the MediaTek MT6750 chipset with an octa-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz. The device has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM. On the GPU side, it has Mali-T860 processor. The Zenfone 3s Max scores low on the benchmark tests. For the AnTuTu test it managed to get a score of 39444, while on the GeekBench test the single core score was only 591 and the multi-core was 2412 which is quite low. Many times you cannot judge a phone based on benchmarking test. In normal use the phone performs good. As for the gaming performance, surprising the phone ran heavy graphics game like N.O.V.A. 3 very well. This is due to the fact that this is an HD display, so the GPU can handle anything that you throw at it. Overall the performance is good when it comes to Zenfone 3s Max. But if you do plan to install Nova or any other launcher, that will slow down your normal usage by a little bit.

This is the first phone from ASUS that ships with Android Noughat which is the latest android version. ASUS has its Zen UI running on top of it which actually makes it difficult for you to notice the android version. I hope they plan to make the Zen UI a bit more similar to stock android experience and remove the bloatwares.

Camera

ASUS Zenfone 3s Max comes with a 13 MP rear shooter with f/2.0 aperture. It has dual-tone LED flash with no laser assist for focusing. You can take some decent pictures in daylight but in some cases, the light exposure was a little bit more. The images could be a bit more sharper. The 8 MP front-facing camera is capable of taking some good selfies. You can record full HD videos at 30 fps with the rear camera. The low light pictures were good especially when you turn on the night mode. Overall the camera on the Zenfone Max 3s is average and is not something that I would recommend to a photographic enthusiast.

Connectivity and Sound

micro-USB, speaker grills

ASUS Zenfone 3s Max supports dual SIM 4G VoLTE. It has one micro SIM and one nano-SIM slot. It is a hybrid SIM slot so you can either insert a memory card or the second SIM. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and USB OTG. The fingerprint sensor on the phone is not that great when you change the alignment of the thumb. The speaker on the Zenfone 3s Max is pretty loud and impressive. If you remember the old china phones with loud speaker, just add some clarity and you have the speaker of Zenfone 3s Max.

Battery

This is the feature where Zenfone 3s Max kills every competitor. It has a massive 5000 mAh battery that runs for almost 1.5-2 days with mixed usage. In case of power use, the battery will last for 1 day with 4G usage included. The max series will never disappoint you when it comes to the battery. And I really think that it is one of the key features that every smartphone must have. Plus you also have reverse charging feature which makes your device a power bank and can charge other devices.

Price

Zenfone 3S Max is priced at Rs.14,999 on Flipkart. It will also be available in offline stores. The price could have been a bit less to make it a good buy. For all those having high battery requirements can definitely go for this device. The phone is available in black and gold color.

Verdict

The pros of Zenfone 3s Max are the mid-level performance, battery life and the audio output level. Camera performance is average. They can surely work on the Zen UI to give it a more stock android feel, so one can truly enjoy the features of different android upgrades. So any person with mid-level usage and more battery requirements can go for Zenfone 3s Max while others with camera requirements can consider its competitors. So I hope you now know the answer to the question is ASUS Zenfone 3s Max worth buying or not.
